What a Title Loan Costs in Texas
A Texas car title loan has three cost pieces: interest paid to the lender, a Credit Access Business (CAB) fee paid to Discount Car Title Loan, and a one-time title fee. This guide shows how those add up using examples from our posted schedule of fees, and how paying early lowers the total.
What makes up the cost
Discount Car Title Loan (Vin-Title, LLC) is a Credit Services Organization, not the lender. The loan is made by an unaffiliated third-party lender, which receives the interest: 9.95% on the outstanding principal on the Texas OCCC Notice and Fee Schedule posted on our schedule of fees page.
The Credit Access Business (CAB) fee is what DTL charges. On the posted schedule it is $28.00 every calculation period for each $100.00 borrowed, and it's the largest part of the cost.
The one-time $28 title (lien) fee is financed into the amount borrowed, which is why the cost disclosures describe a $1,000 loan as $1,028 borrowed.
The only other posted charges apply if something goes wrong: a $30 returned item charge each time a payment is returned, and a late charge of 5% of the payment amount or $7.50, whichever is greater. Every example on this page comes from the posted schedule at market rates with no Loan Optimizer discounts.
Two worked examples: $1,000 installment vs $1,000 single payment
Here is the same amount under both loan structures, taken from the $1,000 rows of the posted schedule: market rates, no discounts, and payments made exactly as scheduled for the full 180-day term.
Read the CAB fee row first. On the installment loan it totals $1,211.45. On the single payment loan it is calculated every 30 days for six periods on principal that never comes down, so it totals $1,727.04. That's most of the gap between the two.
| Installment (6 monthly payments) | Single payment (one payment at maturity) | |
|---|---|---|
| Amount to borrower | $1,000 | $1,000 |
| Term | 180 days | 180 days |
| Title (lien) fee, financed | $28 | $28 |
| Interest paid to lender (9.95%) | $35.04 | $50.40 |
| CAB fee paid to DTL | $1,211.45 | $1,727.04 |
| Total finance charges | $1,246.49 | $1,777.44 |
| APR | 245.88% | 350.81% |
| Total of payments | $2,274.49 | $2,805.44 |
How paying early changes the total
Those totals assume only the scheduled payments for the full term. Interest is charged on the outstanding principal, so the sooner the balance comes down, the less you pay. Our 2025 cost disclosures for $1,028 borrowed (a $1,000 loan plus the $28 lien fee), at market rates with no discounts, list approximate payoff amounts.
Pay the installment loan off after 1 month and the total paid is approximately $1,323.40, against $2,274.49 if you make all six scheduled payments. At 2 and 3 months, the single payment loan costs more to pay off.
The posted terms also encourage paying more than the minimum to reduce interest costs. Ask your store how an extra payment is applied, and get any payoff amount in writing.
| Paid off after | Installment: interest and fees | Installment: total paid | Single payment: interest and fees | Single payment: total paid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 weeks | $291.62 | $1,319.62 | $291.48 | $1,319.48 |
| 1 month | $295.40 | $1,323.40 | $295.12 | $1,323.12 |
| 2 months | $567.77 | $1,595.77 | $591.64 | $1,619.64 |
| 3 months | $809.35 | $1,837.35 | $887.88 | $1,915.88 |
| 4 months | $1,010.89 | $2,038.89 | Not listed | Not listed |
Installment or single payment?
On the installment loan you make six monthly payments. On the $1,028 cost disclosure those are $379.08 for payments 1 through 5 and $379.09 for the final payment, for a total of $2,274.49 without discounts. The balance comes down every month, and no large payment waits at the end.
On the single payment loan, one payment is due at maturity, 180 days out. Nothing comes off the principal along the way, so the total of payments without discounts or principal pay down is $2,805.44 on the same $1,028. Carried to full term, it's the higher-cost structure at every amount on the posted schedule. Either way, borrow only what you need.
The Loan Optimizer discount program
None of the examples on this page include a discount. Qualified customers may save up to 50% on applicable fees through our discount program when eligibility requirements are met and payments remain in good standing. Your store can tell you whether you qualify when you apply.
How to get your own written estimate
These are posted examples, not a quote. Your figures depend on the amount, the structure, and how quickly you pay. Slide to the amount you need and we'll text you a no-obligation estimate, then bring your lien-free title, a valid ID, and proof of income to your nearest DTL store. Before you sign, the written cost disclosure shows your interest, CAB fee, APR, each payment, and total of payments. Ask what the payoff would be at 1, 2, and 3 months.
